The triple crises of COVID-19, a declining economy, and our urgency to tackle racial justice all run directly through our preK-12 education system. Calls for systemic change have never been louder. In Tuesday’s plenary, Kaya Henderson, CEO of Reconstruction US and former D.C. chancellor of schools, and DeRay Mckesson, co-founder of Campaign Zero will bring their perspectives as educators and activists on fundamental questions such as: What is the purpose of school? What essential capacities will learners need in order to bolster our democracy? What should schools teach, especially regarding our country’s racial history? And who should be leading our schools and classrooms? Following their conversation, Brooke Stafford-Brizzard of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Jacqueline Jones of the Foundation for Child Development, and Marc Sternberg of the Walton Family Foundation will take the stage for a discussion moderated by Layla Avila, CEO and executive director of Education Leaders of Color. These members of the philanthropic community will reflect on the challenge of meeting the varied needs of the preK-12 system in this moment in which threats to equity are growing.
