Grantmakers for Education MIT Site Visit

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Continually ranked among the nation's top universities, it has a deep commitment to harnessing the potential of new technology to revolutionize learning, both at MIT and around the world. Grantmakers for Education is partnering with MIT to offer members a site visit to the university on April 7, 2016 from 8:30am - 12:30pm that will explore the future of teacher preparation, digital learning, and STEM education in an increasingly digitized world. Breakfast will be served.
Below is an overview of what participants will access and experience during the site visit.
Teacher Preparation
The Woodrow Wilson Academy for Teaching and Learning is collaborating with a new research effort within MIT’s Office of Digital Learning called the MIT PK12 Initiative. MIT PK12 is designed to fill a growing need in education by providing new capabilities to teachers as they transform their classrooms (infancy through secondary) into the technology-enhanced learning environments of tomorrow. Participants will learn about blended learning modules, simulations, and intensive clinical experiences that teacher preparation candidates will experience through the program’s competencies and curriculum.
Digital Learning
As we look to the future, MIT is reimaging the classroom experience. As part of the Woodrow Wilson Academy and MIT PK12 collaboration, MIT is actively supporting teachers in their efforts to use emerging digital learning tools and environments. Participants will learn about efforts to promote new ideas, technologies, and curricula as well as efforts to combine MIT’s ‘mind and hand’ approach to learning, with recent breakthroughs in cognitive science and digital learning, to develop and support excellent teachers and school leaders.
STEM
MIT actively engages with local schools, educators, after-school programs, students and their parents to enhance student understanding and appreciation of science, technology, engineering and math subjects (STEM). Participants will visit the “experiential learning” hub, the MIT Edgerton Center, which creates opportunities for both MIT students and K-12 students to engage in hands-on activities and projects in science and engineering. Discover this dynamic place where students make discoveries and put theory into practice.
The MIT site visit is an optional component of the Education Grantmakers Institute. The cost is included in your registration.
