Over the last ten years, the school to prison pipeline has received a lot of attention from community-based organizations and funders, and through this work an overall reduction in suspensions has occurred. However, what has received less attention is another step in the pipeline: alternative education. Students are usually transferred to alternative schools, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, because of truancy, discipline or court involvement. Understanding the pathways to and education in these settings is critical to ending the harm caused by this part of the pipeline and creating pathways to success for all students.
