Drawing upon research on rural schools and communities and the experience of rural community leaders, this interactive session challenges common myths about rural communities and builds knowledge about the racial diversity, inequality and varied economic contexts that characterize rural America. We explore the civic and economic roles of schools and offer funders concrete strategies for partnering in rural spaces. Presenters include Mara Casey Tieken, author of Why Rural Schools Matter, and the leaders of two rural, racially diverse nonprofits. A rural funder will serve as discussant.
