EPWG Webinar: Delivering on the Promise of the Common Core (Part 2)

Many believe the robust implementation of the Common Core State Standards offers a unique pathway to dramatic gains in student achievement. And for funders to be helpful, we will need a richer understanding of how to best support successful implementation in schools and communities across the country.

Forty-five states and the District of Columbia have already adopted the Common Core State Standards and are beginning to make initial progress on implementation. Yet, full implementation of the Common Core will be a complex process with significant roles for funders and their grantees. “Delivering on the Promise of the Common Core” is the second of a two-part GFE series on Common Core implementation. This web seminar will focus on district-level challenges and opportunities.

Building on the first web seminar which focused on state-level implementation, the program will feature speakers with deep experience in managing complex district change processes and connecting the dots for funders. Deputy Chief Academic Officer for Curriculum and Instruction Brian Pick, recipient of The Council for Great City Schools’ Curriculum Leadership Award, will share an inside view of the District of Columbia’s experience and challenges implementing the Common Core. Superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools MaryEllen Elia, recipient of College Board's District of the Year Beacon Award, will offer an overview of challenges to district level implementation in Hillsborough County Schools serving students in Tampa, Florida. Both speakers will provide examples of what foundations can do to invest in Common Core implementation, including strategies and “quick win” starting points. Finally, Chris Shearer of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation will frame the conversation and review more common strategies and how funders can identify ways to best support the successful implementation of the Common Core.
