Data is a key lever that helps parents, instructors, institutions, and policymakers answer their most pressing education questions. Data is used to inform decision-making, tailor services to meet people’s needs, and guide the allocation of scarce resources into approaches that work. States have made incredible progress in using data to improve the outcomes of learners from early learning to the workforce. More work, however, must be done to ensure all stakeholders are empowered with this information. With education data, foundations and their grantees can answer questions that are important to their work, such as:

• How do we improve the quality of instructors and administrators in America’s schools?
• Are institutions producing enough graduates with the right degrees or skills to meet workforce needs?
• Are all learners on track and prepared for opportunities in college and career?
• Are our programs effectively producing change and empowering families, teachers, and communities?
