Release Events - A View from the Classroom: What Teachers Can Tell Philanthropy About the Needs of Schools - POSTPONED

Program Dates
February 11, 2020 - ongoing

What can over a million teachers tell us about the needs of schools? Grantmakers for Education's recently released report, A View from the Classroom: What Teachers Can Tell Philanthropy About the Needs of Schools, digs into the data from 1.8 million teacher requests on the crowdfunding site DonorsChoose to tell the story from inside today's classrooms.

The report examines:

  • What are the needs that teachers identify and how have they changed over time?
  • How do requests and funding patterns differ in high- and low-poverty contexts?
  • Where is there alignment between trends in teacher requests and trends in funder priorities? Where is there not?

When viewed in aggregate, teacher requests reveal equity issues and a shortage of both nonacademic and academic basic needs. When teacher requests are compared to philanthropy's funding priorities from GFE's Trends in Education Philanthropy: Benchmarking 2018-19, the report shows some alignment, but also offers an important opportunity for insight.
