Emergency Funds and the Early Care and Education Sector: What Are We Learning
We know that many funders are opening emergency funds for the child care sector or may be supporting a local emergency fund that has child care as one of the responses areas. In this effort, all participants are “learning as they go.”
On April 16, Early Childhood Funders Collaborative will co-host a discussion with Grantmakers for Education on early childhood-related state and national emergency funds to learn more about how private philanthropy is involved, how funds are prioritizing needs/grants and thinking about immediate needs vs. long-term sustainability, and what lessons we’re learning about the needs of those applying for emergency grants.
Featured emergency funds will include:
- Local: Philadelphia Emergency Fund to Stabilize Early Learning – Elliot Weinbaum, William Penn Foundation; and Rashanda Perryman, Vanguard
- Regional/State: West Central Initiative Emergency Child Care Grant Program (Minnesota) – Nancy Jost
- National: Home Grown Fund for Home-Based Child Care – Natalie Renew
- National Domestic Workers Alliance Coronavirus Care Fund – Ai-jen Poo
As part of our discussion we will consider the extreme demand for these and other funds, demonstrating that private philanthropy cannot sustain the ECE sector on its own, and how private philanthropy can partner with public funding to ensure a more equitable and sufficient response to needs.
