Beyond the Test: New Measures for Teacher Influence and Student Success
Over the past decade, one of the most controversial and troubling topics in education is standardized testing. While informative, do test scores really provide a good, predictive measure of academic success for students? Are student test scores a useful reflection of teacher quality? Research from Dr. Kirabo Jackson of Northwestern University points to alternative, noncognitive measures that can be much stronger at identifying student success and teacher effectiveness. Jackson's research is opening the door to understanding how to measure skills such as adaptability, motivation, and self-restraint - skills that are essential to success in college and career - and teachers' impact on development of those skills.
