EPWG Webinar: Delivering on the Promise of the Common Core (Part 1)

Program Dates
April 19, 2012 | 11 am Pacific

Many believe the robust implementation of the Common Core State Standards offers a unique pathway to dramatic gains in student achievement.  And for funders to be helpful, we will need a richer understanding of how to best support successful implementation in schools and communities across the country.

Forty-five states and the District of Columbia have already adopted the Common Core State Standards and are beginning to make initial progress on implementation.  Yet, full implementation of the Common Core will be a complex process with significant roles for funders and their grantees.

John B. King, education commissioner at the New York State Department of Education, will share experiences and challenges when implementing the Common Core. Michael Cohen, president of Achieve, will provide an overview of the implementation framework, explain the relationship between new standards and the other reforms, and identify key implementation challenges for states. Barbara Chow, education program director at The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, will discuss funder roles in supporting Common Core implementation and future investment opportunities. Moderated by Chris Tebben, executive director at Grantmakers for Education, we’ll learn more about the complex process of implementation and its implications for grantmakers.

Presented by Grantmakers for Education's Education Policy Working Group.
